GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION

The municipality of kalawit is located in the interior part of Zamboanga Peninsula which is approximately 181 kilometers from Dipolog , the Provincial capital of Zamboanga del Norte. It is bounded on the north by Labason, on the south by Zamboanga del Sur, on the west by Gutalac and on the east by Tampilisan.

At the eastern part of Kalawit is Patawag River bordering the municipalities of liloy and Tampilisan. On the southern part are the Poblacion and barangays Batayan, Gatas, and Marcelo bordering the municipality of Titay, Zamboanga del Sur. On the Western part is Kipit River bordering the municipality of Gutalac. On the Northern part is the municipality of Labason, the mother municipality.

LAND AREA

The municipality of kalawit occupies a total land area of 25,000 hectares which represents abour 3.47 percent of the total land area of Zamboanga del Norte province. it is composed of 14 barangays. Of the total municipal area, the Poblacion which is the urban core constitute 11.2 percent while the rest are unevenly distributed other barangays.

TOPOGRAPHY 

The topography condition of the municipality is approximately constituting 30 percent rolling and 40 percent hilly to mountainous. It is only in barangay Poblacion and Batayan ehere some part of the area are plain and are devoted to rice farming.

CLIMATE 

Kalawit fallls under the fourth type of climate in the country. Dry season takes place between December to May and wet the rest of the year.

INDUSTRY 

Inasmuch as the municipality of Kalawit is basically agricultural, relatively few industrial establishments can be seen in the area. records of the Municipal Planning and Development Office show that Kalawit has 11 agri-based industries which are mostly rice and corn milling.

TRANSPORTATION

Mobility being one of the basic needs of man plays an important in supporting all other sectors in the economy basically on agriculture. Its efficiency in the transport both the resources and the procedure to desired destination speaks well of development. Since it is one of the tools for action, implementation and monitoring the progress and enhancement of the area, it follows that provision of roads and bridges should be one of the top priorities for the development of the municipality.

The municipality of Kalawit can be reached only by land transportation. Poblacion is linked by a thirteen kilometers provincial road from Barangay Gatas highway junction. The shortest route however is via Barangay Namnama highway junction in the municipality of Titay province of Zamboanga Sibugay whwerin Kalawit can be reached at only at a distance of 7.0 kilometer

The only means of transportation in the municipality is the single motorcycles(Habal-Habal). It carries passengers from the highway (Gatas, Namnama or Labason) to the Poblacion. Agricultural products are carried by these means of transportation.
